JACK LYNETT
My first mentor is my father. Without my father, I would never have spent so much time on the Niagara River. This is a photo from the 1950s when he was a construction worker on the Lewiston Bridge. There were no rules about safety lines attached to the workers at that time!
My father wanted a boat, but he couldn't afford one. He decided to build his own boat. He built a 30' cabin cruiser and our family had many holidays on this boat. We went to the Finger Lakes in New York state; we went through the Welland Canal; but mostly, we stayed on the Upper Niagara River. My dad always encouraged me to go after my goals in life.
'NIAGARA RIVER
My second mentor is not a human. My second mentor is the Niagara River. Walking along the river, swimming in the river or boating on the river all affect me in the same way. These activities help me keep a positive perspective on life. I am most familiar with the Upper Niagara River; I lived there for several years. I love looking at the strong current where the river road runs so close to the shore. People think it's dangerous. If you know what you're doing in that current, it's quite safe.
